During a meeting between Marc Knapper, the US Ambassador to Vietnam, and Bui Thanh, Vietnam's Minister of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that Vietnam is willing to engage in negotiations with the US to eliminate all import tariffs. The country is also seeking a postponement of the 46% import tax announced by President Donald Trump. This aligns with Trump's statements made on Friday. Bui Thanh, a deputy prime minister of Vietnam, expressed during the meeting with the US Ambassador that Vietnam is prepared to discuss reducing tariffs on American goods to zero. He also requested a delay in Trump's 46% tariff on imports from Vietnam to facilitate tax negotiations between the two countries. Additionally, To Lam, the leader of Vietnam's Communist Party, has dispatched a special envoy to the US to continue the discussions. Lam reportedly asked Trump to delay the tariffs by a minimum of 45 days after April 9, based on a circulating letter. Trump's recent remarks on Truth Social echoed Thanh's statement, indicating a positive phone call with Lam affirming Vietnam's desire to reach an agreement on tariff reduction. Following Trump's implementation of a 10% base tariff rate, higher tariffs for specific nations, including Vietnam, are set to take effect on April 9. Stocks of companies like Nike, which have significant manufacturing operations in Vietnam, surged following Trump's announcement.
