Clearing AI Clutter: Simplifying Your Instagram and TikTok Feeds
/Article

The digital realm is inundated with peculiar content made using artificial intelligence (AI). Known as AI slop, this content includes unconventional images and videos crafted through generative AI software, depicting surreal scenarios such as religious figures combined with shrimp or animals engaged in unusual activities. Its primary purpose is to attract clicks and views.

Social media algorithms ensure that once you engage with a piece of AI slop, you will encounter more of it in your feed over time. Recently, while casually browsing on Instagram, I stumbled upon a video showing what appeared to be someone removing barnacles from a dolphin. Initially, I believed it to be real, only later realizing it was AI-generated content. However, this action inadvertently signaled to Instagram that I wanted more of such content in my Explore page.

Dealing with this flood of AI-generated content can be bothersome. Luckily, there is a way to swiftly reset your content preferences:

1. Access Instagram and tap on the profile icon at the bottom right of the screen. Next, select the three horizontal lines in the top right corner and choose "Content preferences." 2. Within this section, you can adjust your interests, view hidden words or phrases, and modify settings regarding sensitive topics. 3. Tap on "Reset suggested content," and follow the prompts to confirm your decision. This action alters the types of images and videos you see and minimizes AI-generated content in your feed.

A similar process can be carried out on TikTok to refresh your feed and eliminate undesirable content. Simply navigate to your profile, access settings and privacy, choose content preferences, and select the option to refresh your feed. This procedure will not affect videos from accounts you follow.
