Lesotho Seeks Dialogue with US Regarding Concerning Tariffs
/Article

Lesotho is facing a critical situation as it prepares a delegation to travel to Washington to address the high tariffs imposed by the United States, which could devastate almost half of its exports and severely impact its economy. The trade minister expressed concern over the new U.S. policy, labeling it as unexpected and detrimental since the U.S. is a crucial market for Lesotho, receiving 45% of its exports. Lesotho, known for exporting textiles to the U.S., fears the repercussions of the 50% reciprocal trade tariff implemented by President Trump. In response, Lesotho is working on forming a delegation to negotiate with the U.S. and exploring alternative markets like the European Union and the Africa free continental trade area. Despite being one of the poorest countries with a GDP per capita of $916 in 2023, Lesotho is determined to navigate through this challenging situation.
