Denzel Washington, a highly acclaimed performer, expresses a preference for live theater over acting in movies.

In a recent interview with CBS News, Denzel Washington, known for his roles in films like Training Day and Fences, emphasized that his heart lies in theater despite his Hollywood success. He stated that he is primarily a stage actor who also works in film, not the other way around. Washington, now 70 years old, is currently starring in the Broadway revival of Shakespeare's Othello at the Barrymore Theatre in New York City, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago.

Washington rejects the label of a "Hollywood actor," instead identifying himself as a "Mt. Vernon actor," reflecting his roots in New York. He credits his interest in Othello to his time at Fordham University and draws inspiration from legendary actor James Earl Jones, who played the role in a previous Broadway revival.

Washington also highlighted the differences between acting on stage and in film, pointing out that theater gives more control to the actor, while films are more director-driven. He stressed the autonomy and challenge of live theater compared to the collaborative process of filmmaking.

The production of Othello is scheduled to run at the Barrymore Theatre until June 8.
