White House Official Confirms Trump’s Pardon of BitMEX Co-Founders
/Article

President Donald Trump has granted pardons to the three co-founders of BitMEX, a cryptocurrency exchange, according to a White House official, as reported by CNBC. The co-founders had admitted to money-laundering charges. The timing of the pardons coincides with a positive outlook in the crypto industry regarding potential relaxed regulations under Trump, who had previously attracted support from cryptocurrency donors. Prosecutors alleged that BitMEX and its co-founders violated the Bank Secrecy Act by neglecting to implement anti-money-laundering and "know your customer" programs between 2015 and 2020. BitMEX did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Additionally, Trump has also pardoned Trevor Milton, the founder of Nikola, an electric and hydrogen-powered truck manufacturer that filed for bankruptcy, who had been convicted of fraud.
