New York Attorney General Letitia James advised 23andMe customers to delete their accounts and safeguard their data following the company's bankruptcy filing. Stressing the importance of protecting sensitive genetic information, James emphasized the need for New Yorkers to take measures to secure their data. 23andMe filed for bankruptcy in the United States due to decreased demand for its DNA testing kits and a data breach in 2023 that harmed its reputation. While the company assured that customer data protection would not be impacted by the bankruptcy process, customers remain concerned and have been sharing instructions on social media on how to delete their accounts. James offered assistance to New York residents experiencing difficulties in removing their data from 23andMe's records. California Attorney General Rob Bonta also encouraged customers to delete their genetic data, attributing it to 23andMe's financial troubles.
