Report Indicates Boeing Considering Revising or Withdrawing Guilty Plea

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Boeing is seeking to modify the guilty plea agreement it entered into last year. The plane manufacturer had pleaded guilty to breaching a deferred prosecution agreement related to the 2018 and 2019 plane crashes that resulted in the deaths of 346 individuals. A federal judge rejected the plea deal in December, citing concerns over a stipulation requiring diversity considerations for the independent monitor overseeing Boeing's probation.

Boeing is now attempting to have its guilty plea revoked or seek a reduced punishment, particularly with the change in administrations to the Trump administration. The company had admitted guilt in July for defrauding the federal government, as it was accused of violating safety conditions following the plane crashes. Negotiations over the plea deal have continued into the new administration, with Boeing aiming to receive the Department of Justice's approval for amending the agreement. The company is specifically looking to eliminate the requirement of appointing an external monitor while maintaining the substantial spending commitment of over $400 million on enhancing safety practices. Boeing chose not to comment on The Wall Street Journal's report, and the Department of Justice has yet to respond to requests for comment. As of Tuesday morning, Boeing's shares had increased by less than 1%.
