In London, the European Union has issued directives for Apple to make its iPhone and iPad operating systems compatible with rival technologies. This marks the first instance of the EU enforcing its digital regulations, specifically the Digital Markets Act. The EU Commission initiated “specification proceedings” last year to specify the steps Apple needed to follow to adhere to the DMA, which became effective recently. The Commission's decision outlined actions required by Apple to enhance compatibility with smartwatches and other devices on the iOS system. Additionally, measures were delineated to streamline the process for software developers requesting access to iPhone features. Furthermore, the EU Commission noted that Google was not fully compliant with the DMA, as it favored its own services in search results and limited developers from informing users about more affordable alternatives outside the Google Play Store app marketplace.
