Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is reportedly in discussions once again to acquire the cybersecurity startup Wiz for approximately $30 billion, according to sources familiar with the situation cited by the Wall Street Journal. The Journal indicated that a potential deal might be close, with no immediate responses to requests for comment from Alphabet and Wiz representatives.
This potential acquisition would be the latest development in the ongoing talks between Alphabet and Wiz. Previously, in July, Wiz declined an acquisition offer worth up to $23 billion from Alphabet, choosing instead to proceed with its plan for an initial public offering. This decision was a setback for Google in its efforts to compete with Microsoft and Amazon in the competitive cloud services market.
Google's interest in Wiz stems from its desire to enhance its cybersecurity capabilities. Wiz, based in New York, specializes in connecting to major cloud storage providers like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure to identify and address security threats within stored data. Google's previous notable cybersecurity acquisition was Mandiant, purchased for $5.4 billion several years ago.
