EXCLUSIVE: Maseo opens up to AllHipHop about the highly anticipated release of the “Clear Lake Audiotorium” EP and the journey of moving forward without Trugoy the Dove.
De La Soul made waves in the early ’90s with a legendary string of albums including 3 Feet High and Rising (1989), De La Soul is Dead (1991), and Buhloone Mindstate (1993).
At their creative peak, the Long Island trio—consisting of Posdnuos, Maseo, and Trugoy the Dove, with production by the iconic Prince Paul—dropped the Clear Lake Audiotorium EP in conjunction with the release of Buhloone Mindstate. Originally a limited edition pressing in 1994 exclusively for select DJs, the EP was treasured by collectors for its rarity, with only 500 copies ever produced.
The re-release by Reservoir Media on March 7 will bring the project back to life in digital format, as well as limited-edition CD and vinyl in a striking sea green gel sleeve. The EP features standout tracks like “Patti Dooke” with a verse from the late Guru, and “In the Woods” featuring Shortie No Mass.
Maseo reflects on the recording process, reminiscing about the camaraderie and creativity that defined that era, heavily influenced by their peers in A Tribe Called Quest. The EP encapsulates a time of musical exploration and collaboration, showcasing De La Soul's evolution.
The announcement of the EP comes amidst a whirlwind of activity for Pos and Maseo, including recent performances in Switzerland and headlining at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Pos also received a Grammy nomination for his collaboration with Common and Pete Rock.
De La Soul's enduring legacy continues to shine, with their music featured in various platforms and recent releases of remastered tracks. The spirit of Trugoy the Dove remains a guiding force for the group as they navigate this new chapter without their dear friend.
Stay tuned for Part II of the Maseo interview on AllHipHop as the journey of De La Soul unfolds.
